Opps - Mason fell in the pool! No worries he's a proud graduate of ISR

To provide some background, Mason took the ISR (infant swim and rescue) course a few months ago. A pretty rigorous rescue swim course that is 6 weeks long, 5 days a week, 10 minutes a day. It definitely was not a "fun" experience for all of us initially, however, Mason learned some very valuable water skills.

So as the story goes, we went to Warren Ohio to visit Brian's family (Na Na, Pa Pa, Ne Ne, Uncle Raymond, Aunt Tina, Uncle Buddy, Aunt Dee, Uncle Jason, Aunt Amiee, Aunt Patty Lou, and cousins Jacob, Ryleigh, Zachary, Ethan & McKenzie.) His parents have a pool, so we wanted to get him in it while we were there to practice his "skills." So on Friday, July 5th, I was letting Mason kick his legs in the water while he sat on the side of the pool. The water was cool, only 79 degrees. I jumped in (freezing cold I might add) and was going to have Mason come in with me and practice his float and play for a bit. Brian's family gathered around to see Mason float...

Well, Mason had other ideas and was having fun walking around the pool showing off for everyone. Next thing we knew Mason's little foot slipped off the edge as he was turning the corner of the pool...head first all the way down to the bottom he went. Ugh! Everyone watched in sheer terror as Mason slowly but surely worked his way up to the top and flipped himself over into the float. As soon as he gasped for air, I picked him up and praised him for the good job he did. My heart was beating so fast and it was so hard to just stand there 2 feet away from him in the water as Mason worked so hard to get himself out of a terrible predicament. Mason was upset of course and needed some consoling. His left arm was a little red probably from bumping it as he fell in, but no other obvious injuries. The family was certainly impressed with what they witnessed, although shook up a bit.

Disclaimer: So you don't think we are bad parents again, I must add that Brian & I were trained not to rescue him unless he really needed to be rescued. We had to get in the water with Mason during his last lesson and practice his skills with him. Very hard to put your child face down in the water, only to watch him flip over to the float. But very important to the process. Mason learned the skills and should use them if a situation should arise. And of course, lots of praise when he does a good job.

If you are interested in learning more about infant swim and rescue (ISR) you can chaeck out the web site www.infantswim.com. I (we) obviously felt committed to this program and certainly see the value in the investment. Too many kids have drowned and it can happen soooo quickly, quicker than I ever thought. The video on the website is pretty compelling.

Have a great day!
ps...thanks for the kiss Aunt Amiee!
Love, Brian, Me & Mason
